Vikings in the Netherlands
"Vikingr" is a verb for going on a adventure. So it is nothing more then a collection for the brave souls who went overseas for trading or even pillaging. At any way, a very nice investment for a wealthy life. But it could be at a very high price!
Vikings in general where al sorts of people from mostly the region of Scandinavia. From nobles till "simple" farmers who tried their luck elsewhere. With mighty ships with great speed and strenght they sailed the world seas for wealth, land and trade.
But they weren't giant bloodthirsty blondhaired barbarians. Most of all they where traders, superior craftsman and cunning warriors. Around the year 835 they also visited the Netherlands. Where they raided Dorestad(near Wijk bij Duurstede) many times but also Wieringen, a small tradepost in North Holland. Many plunderings on the two towns of Callants and 'Oge. Because they lived in such a great fear they eventually ended up becoming one small strong fortification against the voilence. A town by the name Callantsoog, still excisting to this very day.
Probably they also came by Huysduyne (now known as Huisduinen, Den Helder) because in that era this town was already known for whale hunting.
But also Den burg might answer a few questions, where it had her base in the shire of Texla, nowadays Texla, or better said; Texel is an island. Den burg was build on order of Charlemagne, to protect the inhabitants of the aggresive pillagers. But also De Schooten(Den Helder) is known in Merovingian(late roman) and Carolingian times as a small patch of land with some farms on it. The oldest dating evidance of Huysduyne is dated as far back as 723!
Vikings where from all sorts of classes. Formidable that didnt had the fear of death upon them, craftsmen that made the finest pieces of every day items, furniture and much more and the traders who made sure that the wealthy would purchase those exotic items from the far north.
But except for the Vikings, we shouldnt loose the original inhabitants of our region out of our eyes, the Frisians (Frisii, Frisia.) What would be their reaction on the traders and the ones with not such good intend?
